There is y there are se traducen los dos por «hay», y ahí empieza el problema: en español «hay» no cambia nunca, y en inglés sí. Esta ficha va a lo práctico: cuándo usar cada uno y las tres trampas donde cae todo el mundo.

Por qué el inglés necesita there is

En español decimos hay y ya está: una palabra que no cambia nunca. El inglés necesita dos piezas, there más el verbo be, y el verbo concuerda con lo que viene detrás. Ese es todo el tema, y también todo el problema.

Fíjate en que en futuro y con modales no cambia nada: siempre there will be, there might be, there should be. Solo hay que elegir entre singular y plural en presente y en pasado.

Negativa y pregunta

Casos resueltos: por qué aquí va uno y no el otro

There ___ (is / are) a table and four chairs in the room.

Va is: There is a table and four chairs.

Esta es la que casi todo el mundo falla. El verbo concuerda con lo primero que aparece, no con la lista entera. Como lo primero es a table, va singular. Si le das la vuelta, cambia: There are four chairs and a table.

There ___ (is / are) some milk in the fridge.

Va is: There is some milk.

Milk es incontable, y los incontables van siempre en singular aunque haya mucha cantidad. Lo mismo con There is some information, There is a lot of traffic, There is bread.

There ___ (is / are) a lot of people at the concert.

Va are: There are a lot of people.

People es plural, aunque no lleve -s. Es el plural de person, así que pide are. La trampa está en el a lot of, que parece singular pero solo es un envase: lo que manda es lo que hay dentro.

It ___ a book on the table. / There ___ a book on the table.

La correcta es There is a book on the table.

It is a book significa es un libro , que es identificar algo, no decir que existe. En español los dos se pueden parecer, pero en inglés there is es para decir que algo existe o está en algún sitio, e it is para decir qué es.

___ (There were / It had) many problems last year.

Va There were: There were many problems.

Nunca se usa have ni had para decir hubo . En español hay viene del verbo haber , y por eso nos sale it has, pero en inglés esa construcción no existe.

How many students ___ (are there / there are) in your class?

Va are there: How many students are there?

Es una pregunta, así que el verbo va delante de there. El orden es el mismo que con cualquier otro sujeto: Is there...?, Are there...?, Was there...?

La pregunta que lo resuelve

Mira la palabra que viene justo detrás. Si es una sola cosa o algo incontable, is. Si son varias, are. Y da igual lo que venga después en la lista: manda la primera.
