There is y there are se traducen los dos por «hay», y ahí empieza el problema: en español «hay» no cambia nunca, y en inglés sí. Esta ficha va a lo práctico: cuándo usar cada uno y las tres trampas donde cae todo el mundo.

La regla, en una línea

El verbo concuerda con lo que viene detrás, no con nada más. Si lo que hay es una cosa, there is. Si son varias, there are.

Las tres trampas

1. Los incontables van en singular. There is a lot of traffic, aunque en español dirías «hay muchos coches». Palabras como information, advice, furniture o money siempre llevan is.

2. Con una lista, manda el primer elemento. There is a table and four chairs. Suena raro traducido, pero es lo correcto: el verbo mira solo a lo que tiene justo detrás.

3. No es lo mismo que «it is». There is introduce la existencia de algo; it is describe algo que ya conocemos. There is a car outside. It is red. Confundirlos es el error número uno de los hispanohablantes.
