Much, many y a lot of: diferencia y ejercicios

Contable (books)Incontable (water)
Afirmativaa lot of booksa lot of water
Negativamany books / a lot ofmuch water / a lot of
PreguntaHow many books?How much water?

Por qué «much» suena raro en afirmativa

I have much money es gramaticalmente posible pero ningún nativo lo dice. En afirmativa se usa a lot of o plenty of. Much y many viven sobre todo en negativas y preguntas.

La excepción es el registro formal escrito: Much has been written about… sí es natural, y queda muy bien en un essay de C1.

Poco y pocos

I have a few friends here = tengo unos cuantos, estoy bien. I have few friends here = tengo pocos, me siento solo.

Estos siempre llevan much y nunca -s: information, advice, news, furniture, luggage, work, money, homework, bread, traffic. Para contarlos se usa una unidad: a piece of advice, two pieces of furniture.

Comprueba que lo has entendido

Ejercicio 1 · Completa

Escribe la palabra que falta.

  1. How ___ students are there in your class?manystudents es contable.
  2. How ___ sugar do you take?muchsugar es incontable.
  3. I don’t have ___ time today.muchtime incontable, y la frase es negativa.
  4. There were ___ of people at the concert.a lot of o lots of — afirmativa.
  5. He gave me a useful ___ of advice.a piece of adviceadvice es incontable, nunca «an advice».
  6. I only have ___ little money left.a little — «un poco».

Ejercicio 2 · Elige

Solo una opción es correcta.

  1. «Tengo mucho trabajo.»I have much work.I have a lot of work.A lot of work — en afirmativa nunca much.
  2. «Tengo pocos amigos aquí» (con pena)I have a few friends here.I have few friends here.
  3. «Necesito información.»I need some informations.I need some information.Information — incontable, no tiene plural en inglés.
  4. «¿Cuántas noticias hay?»How many news are there? How much news is there? How much news is there?news parece plural por la -s pero es incontable y va en singular.

Sigue con contables e incontables o con some, any y no.
