Four teachers talk about marking. A · Priya: «I used to take everything home and mark until midnight. What changed was not a technique but a rule: nothing leaves the building. If it is not marked by six, it waits. My marking is no better, but I am.»   B · Callum: «I write far less than I used to. Three lines, one of them a question. Long comments made me feel thorough and made almost no difference to what came back the following week.»   C · Ines: «The trap is marking as if you were the only reader. Half of what I wrote was really addressed to an inspector who was never going to open the book.»   D · Yusuf: «I mark in class now, with the student next to me. It takes the same total time and I have stopped writing things nobody understands, because they tell me when they do not.»
