A	Priya. For eleven years I was a commercial lawyer, and for eleven years I baked at weekends. My grandmother taught me, in a kitchen that was always too hot, and I never thought of it as anything more than that. When the firm restructured I took the redundancy money and opened a bakery. I will not pretend I do not miss my old salary, because I do, every January. What I had not expected was the alarm clock. Four in the morning is not a time; it is a punishment.
B	Callum. I trained as an actor and I was not a bad one, but there were four months a year when nobody called. A friend from drama school was learning to interpret in sign language and suggested I try it. Everything I had learned about using my face and my hands turned out to matter enormously, and I use it every single day. The money still arrives in strange lumps, and I do still audition now and then, mostly for radio. But this is the work I would keep if I had to choose.
C	Dilek. I swam for my country until my shoulder gave way at twenty-three. There was no decision to make: the doctors made it for me. I began studying physiotherapy while my arm was still in a sling, mostly to have something to do. Now most of my patients are fifteen or sixteen and terrified that their sport is over. I know that face. I watch them doing the exercises and I remember doing exactly the same ones badly.
D	Owen. I taught history for nine years and set crossword puzzles in the evenings for my own amusement. A magazine bought one, then six, then a page a week. I earn considerably less than I did, and my former colleagues still ask when I am going to get a proper job again. The real surprise has been the silence. I assumed I would miss a staffroom full of people. I do not.
