Tarea: In your English class you have been talking about transport. Write an essay: «Cities should ban private cars from the centre.» Notes: pollution, local businesses, and your own idea.

It is often argued that city centres would be far better places if private cars were not allowed in them. While the idea is attractive, it also raises problems that are not always considered.

To begin with, the effect on pollution would be immediate. Cities such as Madrid and Milan have reported measurable falls in air pollution within weeks of restricting traffic, and the benefit is greatest precisely where most people live and work.

On the other hand, local businesses are not always convinced. Shop owners frequently claim that customers who cannot park simply go elsewhere, although studies in several European cities suggest that pedestrian areas actually increase sales in the long term.

All things considered, I believe such bans are justified, provided that public transport is improved first. Removing cars without offering an alternative would only punish those who have no other way of getting to work.

Ejercicio 1 · Elige el conector

Solo uno encaja en el hueco.

  1. The plan is expensive. ___, it would save money in the long term.HoweverMoreoverThereforeHowever — hay contraste entre caro y ahorrar. Moreover añade y therefore concluye.
  2. Public transport is cheap. ___, it reduces traffic.
  3. ___ the fact that it rained, the event was a success.DespiteAlthoughHoweverDespite — es la única que puede ir con the fact that. Although iría con sujeto+verbo directamente.
  4. ___, I believe the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. At the endAll things consideredFinally of allAll things consideredat the end es tiempo físico («al final de la película»), no conclusión.

Ejercicio 2 · Frases de essay

Completa la fórmula.

  1. It is often ___ that technology makes us lazier. It is often argued that… — apertura impersonal perfecta para no empezar con «I think».
  2. ___ balance, the benefits are greater than the costs.
  3. The advantages ___ the disadvantages.outweigh — «pesan más que». Vale por varias palabras corrientes.
  4. Bans are justified, ___ that public transport improves.provided that = as long as, «siempre y cuando». Condicional de nivel alto.
  5. Cities ___ as Madrid have reduced pollution.such as — introduce ejemplos. No confundir con as solo.
