Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)
- 1. You ___ wear a helmet on this bike. It is the law.must.
- 2. You ___ not eat in the laboratory.must. Must not es prohibición. Cuidado con do not have to, que significa lo contrario: que no hace falta.
- 3. There is not ___ milk left, only a drop.much. Milk es incontable, así que much. Many sería para cosas que se cuentan.
- 4. How ___ apples do we need for the cake?many.
- 5. He speaks English very ___ (good).well. Acompaña al verbo speaks, así que hace falta el adverbio, y el de good es irregular: well.
- 6. You ___ (should / not) drink coffee before an exam.should not (también vale shouldn’t).
Parte 2 · Vocabulary (2 puntos)
Completa con la palabra que falta. Seis huecos.
- 7. I have got a sore ___ , it hurts when I swallow.throat.
- 8. If you have a temperature, you should stay in ___ .bed. Stay in bed, sin artículo.
- 9. Remember to ___ the light when you leave the room.turn off (también vale switch off). El contrario es turn on. Con un objeto corto también se puede partir: turn it off.
- 10. Glass, paper and plastic go in different bins because we ___ them.recycle.
- 11. Fruit and vegetables are part of a ___ diet.healthy.
- 12. Do not ___ water: turn the tap off while you brush your teeth.waste.
Two hundred lunchboxes
A secondary school in Girona weighed everything its students threw away at lunchtime for one week. The total was forty-one kilos, and most of it was food that had never been opened.
The science teacher who ran the project did not give anybody a lecture. She simply put the numbers on a poster by the door: how much was thrown away, and what it had cost. Nobody was named.
Six weeks later they weighed it again. It had dropped to twenty-four kilos. The biggest change was not that students ate more, but that they brought less: families had started to notice that half the sandwich came home every day.
The school has now bought two large containers for fruit that nobody wants. Anybody can take from them, and by three o’clock they are always empty.
- 13. What did the school measure? How many students had lunchHow much lunch costHow much students ateHow much food was thrown awayCuánta comida se tiraba. Weighed everything its students threw away. Lo pesaron durante una semana.
- 14. What did the teacher do with the results? She put the numbers on a posterShe stopped the lunch breakShe sent letters to the familiesShe told off the studentsPuso los números en un cartel. Y el texto insiste: did not give anybody a lecture y nobody was named.
- 15. Why did the waste go down?Because students ate moreBecause they brought less foodBecause fewer students cameBecause the school gave less foodPorque llevaban menos comida.
- 16. How much did they throw away six weeks later?Forty-one kilosNothing at allTwenty-four kilosHalf a kiloVeinticuatro kilos.
- 17. What are the containers for?RubbishDrinksFruit that nobody wantsLunchboxesFruta que nadie quiere.
Parte 4 · Writing (2,5 puntos)
