The swimming pool that opened in winter
Our town has an outdoor swimming pool that was built in 1936 and closed every October for eighty years. Two winters ago the council decided, more or less as a joke, to leave it open until December and see what happened.
Fourteen people came on the first Saturday. The water was nine degrees and there were no changing rooms, because they had been locked for the season. By January, when the pool was supposed to be shut, there were more than two hundred swimmers, most of them over fifty.
The council was not prepared for this. Heating the water was out of the question, so instead they installed hot showers, a shed for coats and a small cafe that sells nothing but tea and toast. The swimmers themselves organised the rest, including a rota for checking that nobody stayed in the water too long.
Not everyone is happy. Families with young children say the pool is now unusable in summer because the winter swimmers have taken over the timetable. The council has promised to look at this, which everyone understands to mean that nothing will change for a while.
