Working nights

Yusuf has worked nights for eleven years, first in a hotel and now in a hospital laboratory. People always ask him the same question: does he ever get used to it. His answer is that you get used to the hours but not to the silence.

The practical problems are easy to list. Shopping is done at strange times, dentists only work when he is asleep, and every family event happens on the wrong side of his day. He has learned to be honest about this. For years he said yes to everything and then arrived exhausted and unpleasant.

What he did not expect was that he would come to prefer it. The laboratory at three in the morning is a calm place. There are no meetings, no visitors and no telephone. He finishes more work in a night shift than he used to finish in two days, and nobody interrupts him to ask how the weekend was.

He is careful, though, when younger colleagues ask whether they should try it. It suits him, he says, and it suited him more at thirty than it does at forty five. The tiredness does not disappear; you simply move it somewhere else.
