City to test cargo bikes for rubbish collection

The city council has announced that from next month three of its rubbish collection routes in the old town will be covered by electric cargo bikes instead of lorries. The trial will last six months.

The narrow streets of the historic centre were built long before motor vehicles, and the current lorries can only enter at certain hours. According to the council, the bikes will allow collection to take place twice a day rather than once, and will cut noise complaints, which rose by 40 per cent last year.

Not everyone is convinced. The union representing collection workers has asked for details about weight limits and about what happens in bad weather. «Nobody has explained who takes the bike up the hill in February,» a representative said on Tuesday.

Similar schemes are already running in several European cities. Where they have worked, they have usually replaced part of a route rather than all of it. The council says it will publish the results of the trial in the autumn, whatever they show.
