Ficha 3 · Preguntas, verbos introductorios y excepciones (difícil)

Elige o completa. Aquí es donde se falla en el First.

  1. «Where do you live?» he asked. → He asked me ___ .where did I livewhere I livedwhere I did livewhere lived Iwhere I lived. En estilo indirecto la pregunta pierde el auxiliar y recupera el orden normal: sujeto y luego verbo. Es exactamente el mismo mecanismo que en las preguntas indirectas.
  2. «Are you coming?» she asked. → She asked me ___ I was coming.En las preguntas de sí o no se introduce con if o whether. Sin ellas la frase queda incompleta.
  3. «I’m sorry I broke it,» he said. → He ___ breaking it.said sorry forexcused ofapologised forregretted toapologised for + gerundio. Es el patrón que Cambridge premia: cambiar la frase entera por el verbo que resume la intención, en vez de repetir he said that.
  4. «You should see a doctor,» she said. → She ___ me to see a doctor.saidtold tosuggestedadvisedadvised me to. Suggest no lleva persona delante: sería suggested that I see o suggested seeing. Said nunca va con persona directa.
  5. «Let’s go to the beach,» he said. → He suggested ___ to the beach. (go)suggested going. Suggest pide gerundio o that + sujeto. Nunca suggested to go, que es el error más repetido.
  6. «I didn’t do it,» she said. → She ___ doing it. (deny)denied doing it. Deny lleva gerundio y sustituye a toda la negación.
  7. «Water boils at 100 degrees,» the teacher said. Both are acceptable. The teacher said water boiled at 100 degrees. The teacher said water boils at 100 degrees.Neither is correct.Las dos valen. Cuando lo que se dice sigue siendo verdad, el salto de tiempo es opcional. Muchos manuales solo enseñan la primera, pero un hablante nativo dirá casi siempre la segunda.
  8. «Congratulations!» they said. → They ___ me on passing. (congratulate)congratulated me on + gerundio. Ojo con la preposición: es on, no for.
  9. «I’ll help you,» he said. → He ___ to help me.proposedofferedinvitedrecommendedoffered to help. Offer va con infinitivo. Recommend y propose pedirían gerundio, e invite necesitaría un plan concreto al que invitar.
  10. «Please don’t tell anyone,» she said. → She ___ me not to tell anyone. (beg)begged me not to. Sigue el patrón de las órdenes: verbo + persona + not to + infinitivo.
  11. «I said that to Ana» — ¿cuál es correcta?I said her that.I told her that. Both B and C are correct.I said to her that.B y C. Tell va directamente con la persona (told her) y say necesita to (said to her). Lo único imposible es said her.
