Reading the weather without instruments
Long before satellites, sailors and farmers made (1) about the weather by watching the sky, the sea and the behaviour of animals. Modern meteorologists tend to be (2) about these traditions, and often rightly so, but a few of them turn out to be surprisingly (3) .
The best known is the link between a red sky and the following day. Its (4) is not folklore but physics: the colour depends on dust and moisture in the air to the west, where European weather usually comes from.
