The problem with round numbers
Economists have long known that prices ending in nine (1) better than prices ending in zero, but the reason has proved surprisingly hard to (2) down. The obvious explanation, that shoppers read the first digit and ignore the rest, only accounts for (3) of the effect.
A more recent theory (4) attention to what a round number implies. A price of exactly forty pounds looks decided, even arbitrary, whereas 39.87 looks (5) from something: a cost, a calculation, a negotiation.
