The garden behind the science block
When Mr Okafor suggested turning the strip of waste ground behind the science block into a vegetable garden, the staffroom was not enthusiastic. (1) He was given a budget of forty pounds and told that the project would be reviewed in July.
The first crop was a disaster. Slugs ate the lettuces, the potatoes went in far too late, and a football destroyed an entire row of beans. (2) By October, twelve pupils were staying behind on Thursdays to work on it.
What really changed things was the kitchen. The school cook agreed to buy whatever the garden produced at the price she paid her usual supplier, and to put the name of the garden on the menu. (3) Suddenly the pupils were not gardening; they were running a business.
Not everything has been simple. Holidays are the obvious problem, because vegetables do not stop growing in August. (4) Two families now take turns to water and harvest during the summer, and they keep whatever they pick.
The garden has changed the science lessons themselves as well. Soil samples, rainfall charts and a very long argument about compost have all found their way into the curriculum. (5) Mr Okafor says he has never once had to explain why any of it matters.
The review in July went ahead as planned. (6) The budget for next year is four hundred pounds.
