The shop that lends things

In a small town near Ghent there is a shop where you cannot buy anything at all. You can borrow a drill, a tent, a sewing machine or a ladder for a week, and then you bring it back. (1) The idea came from a woman called Els, who had noticed that her neighbours all owned the same tools and used them twice a year.

Members pay thirty euros a year. (2) Most of the items were donated by people who were moving house or clearing out a garage.

The shop is run entirely by volunteers. (3) Somebody has to check that everything comes back in one piece, and repairs are done on Saturday mornings by a retired electrician.

Not every object is popular. (4) The drills, on the other hand, are booked for months ahead.

Similar shops have now opened in four other towns. (5) Els says she is not surprised, because the idea is really very old.
