Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)

  1. 1. If I had known, I ___ (come) earlier.would have come.
  2. 2. I wish I ___ (can) drive.could. I wish I can no existe.
  3. 3. If only I ___ (not / say) that yesterday.had not said. Arrepentimiento sobre el pasado: if only más past perfect. El yesterday es la pista.
  4. 4. The results ___ (announce) next Friday.will be announced. Pasiva en futuro: will be más participio. Los resultados no se anuncian solos.
  5. 5. The office ___ (clean) when I arrived, so I waited outside.was being cleaned.
  6. 6. If you ___ (study) more, you would pass.studied. Segundo condicional, situación hipotética del presente: pasado simple en el if y would en la otra mitad.

Parte 2 · Vocabulary (2 puntos)

Completa con la palabra que falta. Seis huecos.

  1. 7. She was made ___ after fifteen years at the company.redundant.
  2. 8. I cannot ___ a new laptop this month.afford. Afford es poder permitírselo económicamente. Va casi siempre con can o cannot.
  3. 9. They offered him the job, but the ___ was too low.salary.
  4. 10. He is saving ___ for a car.up. Save up for something es ahorrar con un objetivo concreto. Sin up sería simplemente ahorrar.
  5. 11. I applied for a ___ at the hospital.post (también vale position).
  6. 12. She got into ___ after using the credit card for everything.debt. Get into debt es endeudarse.

The company that pays people to leave

A software company in Utrecht offers every new employee two thousand euros to quit, at any point during their first six weeks. The money is theirs if they walk out; if they stay, they get nothing extra.

The idea is not generosity. If somebody knows in week three that the job is wrong for them, they will usually stay anyway, because leaving looks bad and because rent has to be paid. That person then costs the company far more over the following two years than two thousand euros.

About four per cent take the money. The founder says the number that matters is not that four per cent but the ninety-six: people who were given a real chance to leave and chose to stay behave differently afterwards.

The policy has been copied by two Dutch companies and refused by many more. The most common objection is that it would be seen as an insult, which the founder says is exactly the reaction of a company that would not survive the test.

  1. 13. When can employees take the money?Only in week threeDuring their first six weeksAfter two yearsAt any timeEn las seis primeras semanas.
  2. 14. Why does the company do it?Because the law says soTo look generousBecause keeping the wrong person costs moreTo save money on salariesPorque quedarse con la persona equivocada sale más caro.
  3. 15. What percentage take the money?
  4. 16. What does the founder say about the ninety-six per cent? They are the problemThey behave differently after choosing to stayThey earn lessThey leave laterQue se comportan distinto después de elegir quedarse.
  5. 17. What is the most common objection? It is too expensiveIt would be seen as an insultNobody would take itIt is illegalQue se vería como un insulto.

Parte 4 · Writing (2,5 puntos)

Write about a job you would like to have, and what you would do if you could not get it. Escribe entre 100 y 140 palabras. Esta parte la corrige el profesor.

  • what the job is and why
  • what you would need to study or do
  • what you would do if you did not get it
  • something you wish you had started earlier
