Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)

  1. 1. The bridge ___ (build) in 1890.was built.
  2. 2. This song ___ (play) on the radio every day.is played. Pasiva en presente, porque es una costumbre. Plays dejaría a la canción poniéndose sola.
  3. 3. She said she ___ (be) tired.was. Estilo indirecto: el presente I am tired retrocede un paso y se queda en was.
  4. 4. He told me he ___ (finish) the project the day before.had finished.
  5. 5. The lights are on, so they ___ be at home.must.
  6. 6. That ___ be Marta, she is in Rome this week.cannot (también vale can’t). Es la deducción contraria: es imposible. Must not sería una prohibición, no una deducción.

Parte 2 · Vocabulary (2 puntos)

Completa con la palabra que falta. Seis huecos.

  1. 7. The story was on the front ___ of every newspaper.page.
  2. 8. Do not believe everything you read: check the ___ first.source.
  3. 9. The article was full of fake ___ .news.
  4. 10. There is a lot of traffic ___ in the city centre at eight.jam.
  5. 11. Rent is very expensive, so a lot of people live in the ___ .suburbs.
  6. 12. The train was ___ , so we had to stand all the way.crowded.

The photograph that was not what it looked like

In 2018 a photograph of a flooded street in Manila was shared four million times in two days. It showed a man carrying an old woman through water up to his chest. It was described everywhere as a photo of that week’s typhoon.

It had been taken eleven years earlier, in a different country.

The photographer, who found out from a friend, spent a week writing to newspapers. Three of them corrected the story. The rest never answered, and the photo is still online with the wrong date under it.

What interests her now is not the mistake but the speed. The correction was shared about two thousand times. The original, four million. She says she has stopped expecting the truth to travel as fast as the lie, and that the only thing that works is checking before you press share, which takes about eleven seconds.

  3. 15. How many newspapers corrected the story? All of themThreeFour millionNoneTres.
  4. 16. What interests the photographer most now?The name of the manThe speed of the lie compared with the correctionThe weather in ManilaThe money she lostLa velocidad.
  5. 17. What does she recommend?Writing to newspapersDeleting old photosNot using social mediaChecking before sharingComprobar antes de compartir.

Parte 4 · Writing (2,5 puntos)
