Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)
- 1. Never before ___ so many people voted in this town.had. Never before al principio obliga a invertir, y el past perfect es lo que pide before con un momento pasado de referencia.
- 2. She said she ___ (send) the file the previous week.had sent. Estilo indirecto: el past simple original retrocede a past perfect, y last week se convierte en the previous week.
- 3. The report, ___ conclusions were ignored, is now public.whose.
- 4. Only when the river dried up ___ the council act.did. Only when al principio provoca inversión en la oración principal, y el auxiliar que aparece es did porque el verbo va en pasado simple.
- 5. He asked me not ___ (mention) it to anybody.to mention. Órdenes en estilo indirecto: ask somebody to do, y en negativo el not va delante del to.
- 6. ___ (however) hard we tried, nothing changed.However. Equivale a no matter how hard.

Parte 3 · Reading (2,5 puntos)
The forest that was planted twice
In 2007 a Spanish region announced that it would plant a million trees. The photographs were taken, the schoolchildren were bussed in, and the money was spent. Eleven years later, an audit found that fewer than one in five of the trees was still alive.
Nobody had stolen anything. The failure was duller than that. The species chosen grew quickly and looked impressive in photographs, but needed more water than the site had; nobody had been given the job of watering them after the first summer; and the land had been chosen because it was visible from a main road rather than because anything would grow there.
The second attempt, in 2019, was almost invisible. No press event was held. Species were chosen by two ecologists who had argued publicly against the first plan, half of them were shrubs that nobody would photograph, and a local farmer was paid a small annual sum to check them. Survival after four years is above eighty per cent.
The regional government does not talk much about the second project, and the reason is not hard to guess: it is difficult to hold an event to celebrate having quietly done, on the third attempt, what you announced with a brass band on the first.
- 13. What did the audit find? That money had been stolenThat no trees had been plantedThat fewer than one in five trees had survivedThat the trees were the wrong species onlyQue sobrevivía menos de uno de cada cinco.
- 14. Why was the land chosen the first time?Because it had waterBecause ecologists recommended itBecause it could be seen from a main roadBecause it was cheapPorque se veía desde una carretera, no porque allí fuera a crecer algo.
- 15. What was different about the second attempt? It was done without publicityIt was much biggerIt cost moreIt used the same speciesSe hizo sin publicidad: ningún acto de prensa, y la mitad arbustos que nadie fotografiaría.
- 16. Who checked the trees the second time?A local farmer who was paidThe ecologistsSchoolchildrenNobodyUn agricultor de la zona, pagado.
- 17. Why does the government not talk about the second project? It is not finishedIt failedIt was done by another partyBecause it is hard to celebrate quietly fixing your own mistakePorque es difícil celebrar haber arreglado en silencio tu propio error. La última frase lo dice con ironía.
