Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)

  1. 1. If she had studied engineering, she ___ (work) in Berlin now.would be working. Por eso would be y no would have been.
  2. 2. It ___ (believe) that the virus spread from a single market.is believed. Pasiva impersonal en presente: it is believed that.
  3. 3. We had the results ___ (check) by an independent lab.checked. Causativa: have something done. No los comprobamos nosotros, lo encargamos. El verbo va en participio.
  4. 4. Were it not ___ the funding, the project would have closed.for. If it were not for significa si no fuera por, y aquí aparece invertido y sin if, que es el registro formal.
  5. 5. The samples ___ (analyse) at the moment.are being analysed. Pasiva en present continuous: are being más participio. Se está haciendo ahora mismo.
  6. 6. Provided that you ___ (submit) it by Friday, there is no problem.submit. Provided that funciona como if: la parte de la condición va en presente aunque hable del futuro.

Parte 2 · Vocabulary (2 puntos)

Seis huecos.

  1. 7. The findings were published in a peer-___ journal.reviewed.
  2. 8. The experiment produced ___ (conclude) results.conclusive. Adjetivo de conclude. Si el sentido fuera el contrario, sería inconclusive.
  3. 9. Artificial intelligence is expected to ___ many routine jobs.replace.
  4. 10. The company carried ___ a study on remote work.out. Carry out a study es realizar un estudio. Realise sería darse cuenta, un false friend clásico.
  5. 11. There is no ___ (science) evidence for that claim.scientific. Adjetivo, porque acompaña a evidence. Y evidence es incontable: nunca evidences.
  6. 12. Employees who work from home report higher job ___ (satisfy).satisfaction. Sustantivo con -faction. Job satisfaction es además una colocación fija.

Parte 3 · Reading (2,5 puntos)

Four days, same pay

Between 2022 and 2023, sixty-one British companies moved their staff to a four-day week with no reduction in salary. The trial was run with researchers from two universities, and the companies agreed in advance to publish the results whatever they showed.

Fifty-four of the sixty-one kept the policy afterwards. Revenue across the group rose slightly, sick days fell by about two thirds, and the number of employees who left their jobs dropped by more than half. Those are the figures that were reported everywhere.

The part that received less attention is how the companies got there. Almost none of them simply removed a day. They cut meetings, in some cases by half; they stopped copying everybody into every email; and several introduced blocks of time in which interrupting a colleague was not allowed. Managers reported that the hardest change was not the schedule but admitting how much of the old week had been spent on activity that produced nothing.

The researchers are cautious. The companies that volunteered were mostly small, mostly in services, and were run by people who already believed it might work. Whether a hospital or a factory could do the same is a question the trial simply did not ask.

  1. 13. What did the companies agree to before the trial? To work longer daysTo hire more staffTo pay lessTo publish the results whatever they showedPublicar los resultados salieran como salieran.
  2. 14. What happened to sick days? They roseThey stayed the sameThey fell by about two thirdsThey were not measuredBajaron unos dos tercios.
  3. 15. How did most companies make it work?By removing one day and changing nothing elseBy cutting meetings and interruptionsBy hiring more peopleBy paying overtimeRecortando reuniones e interrupciones.
  4. 16. What did managers find hardest?Measuring the resultsTelling the staffAdmitting how much time had produced nothingThe new scheduleAdmitir cuánto tiempo no producía nada.
  5. 17. Why are the researchers cautious? The results were badNobody kept the policyThe trial was too longThe companies were mostly small and self-selectedPorque las empresas eran pequeñas y se apuntaron voluntariamente, dirigidas por gente que ya creía en la idea.

Parte 4 · Writing (2,5 puntos)

Write about whether you think a four-day week would work in most jobs. Escribe entre 130 y 160 palabras. Esta parte la corrige el profesor.

  • one type of job where it would work
  • one type of job where it would be difficult
  • what would have to change for it to work
