Parte 1 · Grammar (3 puntos)

  1. 1. Hardly ___ she sat down when the phone rang.had. Hardly… when exige inversión: auxiliar delante del sujeto. Su pareja es no sooner… than, con than en vez de when.
  2. 2. He ___ (study) medicine for three years before he changed course.had been studying. Duración anterior a otro momento del pasado: past perfect continuous.
  3. 3. ___ (despite) the rain, the match went ahead.Despite.
  4. 4. She is the ___ (determine) person I know.most determined.
  5. 5. Not only ___ he arrive late, he forgot the tickets.did. Not only al principio provoca inversión, y como el verbo va en pasado simple sin auxiliar propio, aparece did.
  6. 6. The exam was so difficult that ___ candidates passed.few. A few sería positivo, unos cuantos.

Parte 2 · Vocabulary (2 puntos)

Seis huecos.

  1. 7. Her ___ (decide) to study abroad surprised everybody.decision.
  2. 8. The course requires a high level of ___ (commit).commitment. Sustantivo con -ment. Dos emes en commit, y se mantienen.
  3. 9. He applied to five universities and was ___ (accept) by three.accepted.
  4. 10. They fell ___ over money and have not spoken since.out. Fall out with somebody es romper la relación. La preposición cambia el sentido por completo.
  5. 11. ___ (fortunate), the deadline was extended.Fortunately.
  6. 12. She got a scholarship ___ her results.thanks to. Introduce una causa positiva. Because of también valdría, pero thanks to es lo que pide el matiz de suerte.

Parte 3 · Reading (2,5 puntos)

The year off that was not a year off

In Spain the gap year has never really caught on. The assumption is that a student who does not go straight to university has either failed something or lost their way, and that assumption is strong enough that most families do not discuss the option at all.

The data does not support it. A study that followed four thousand British students found that those who had taken a year out arrived at university with slightly lower grades but finished with slightly higher ones, and were significantly less likely to change course in the first year. The effect was not large, but it went in the opposite direction to what most people expect.

The researchers were careful about what they claimed. A year spent working in a supermarket does not produce the same result as a year spent doing nothing, and students who take a year out are, on average, from families who can afford it, which explains part of the difference on its own.

What they do argue is narrower and harder to dismiss: that eighteen is an arbitrary age at which to ask somebody to choose a career, and that a system which treats any pause as a failure will keep producing students who are in the wrong degree and know it by November.

  1. 13. What is the common assumption in Spain about a gap year? That it is compulsoryThat the student has failed or lost their wayThat it improves gradesThat it is expensiveQue el estudiante ha fracasado o se ha perdido.
  2. 14. What did the study find?Students who took a year out finished with slightly higher gradesThere was no difference at allThey arrived with better gradesThey never finished their degreeTerminaban con notas algo mejores, aunque llegaban con notas algo peores.
  3. 15. What were the students less likely to do?Change course in the first yearGo abroadWork while studyingFail an examCambiarse de carrera en primero.
  4. 16. What limitation do the researchers admit? They only studied one universityStudents who take a year out tend to come from families who can afford itThe data was oldThe study was too smallQue suelen venir de familias que pueden permitírselo, y eso explica ya una parte de la diferencia.
  5. 17. What is the writer’s main argument at the end?Eighteen is an arbitrary age to choose a careerEverybody should take a gap yearGap years should be bannedUniversities should be freeQue los dieciocho son una edad arbitraria para elegir carrera.

Parte 4 · Writing (2,5 puntos)

Write about whether students should be encouraged to take a year off before university. Escribe entre 130 y 160 palabras. Esta parte la corrige el profesor.

Tienes que decir:

  • what most people around you think about it
  • one argument in favour
  • one argument against
