Parte 3 · Reading (2,5 puntos)
The exam that nobody could revise for
In 2019 a secondary school in Cardiff tried an experiment with its sixteen-year-olds. For one term, every subject exam contained one question that had not been taught: a problem the students had never seen, worth ten per cent of the mark.
The reaction was immediate and, according to the head of department, almost entirely negative. Parents wrote in. Two teachers refused to take part. The most common complaint was that it was unfair to be tested on something nobody had explained.
The school kept going for the full term. By the end of it, the average mark on the unseen question had risen from three out of ten to just under six, without anybody having taught the content, which is precisely what the department had expected: what improved was not knowledge but the willingness to attempt something unfamiliar instead of leaving it blank.
The experiment was quietly dropped the following year. The head of department, who has since moved schools, says the problem was never the students. It was that a mark which measures how you behave when you do not know the answer is very difficult to defend to somebody who wants to know exactly what will come up.
- 13. What was unusual about the exams? They contained one question on untaught materialThey had no marksThey were shorter than usualThey were marked by studentsLlevaban una pregunta no enseñada.
- 14. How did people react at first?
- 15. What happened to the average mark on that question? It fellIt stayed at threeIt reached tenIt rose to almost sixSubió a casi seis.
- 16. What does the department say improved?Their handwritingTheir attendanceTheir willingness to attempt something unfamiliarTheir knowledge of the subjectLa disposición a intentarlo.
- 17. Why was the experiment dropped? It was hard to defend to people who want to know what will come upIt cost too muchThe students did badlyThe teachers leftPorque era difícil de defender.
