The wrong platform
I have missed exactly one important train in my life, and it was entirely my own fault. I was twenty three, I had a job interview in Manchester at two o clock, and I arrived at the station with forty minutes to spare, which felt like plenty.
The board said platform 4, so I sat on platform 4 and read my notes. What I did not notice was the small announcement, ten minutes later, that the service had been moved to platform 11, at the other end of the station. Everyone around me stood up and walked away. I assumed they were going to buy coffee.
By the time I looked up, the platform was empty and the train had gone. There was another one an hour later, which meant arriving forty minutes late. I phoned the company from the train and explained. The woman who answered was extremely kind, which somehow made it worse.
They still gave me the job. Years later, my manager told me that the reason was the phone call: I had rung before they had noticed I was missing, and I had not blamed the railway. I have told this story to every nervous candidate I have ever interviewed, usually badly.
