I have never seen such a mess.Never have I seen such a mess.
He rarely arrives on time.Rarely does he arrive on time.
She didn’t know what was coming.Little did she know what was coming.

El mecanismo: si no había auxiliar, aparece do / does / did y el verbo vuelve a su forma base. Si ya había uno (have, had, will, can, was), simplemente se adelanta.

Los tres grupos que tienes que reconocer

GrupoQué lo disparaEjemplo
1. Adverbios negativosnever, rarely, seldom, hardly, little, at no time, under no circumstances, on no accountUnder no circumstances should you open that door.
2. Restrictivosonly then, only if, only after, not only… but also, not untilNot only did he lie, but he also stole the money.
3. Condicionales sin ifhad, were, shouldHad I known, I would have called you.

Grupo 1 · Adverbios negativos al principio

ExpresiónSignificadoEjemplo
NevernuncaNever have I felt so alive.
Rarely / Seldomrara vezSeldom do we get a second chance.
Hardly evercasi nuncaHardly ever does it snow here.
Littlepoco, con know, realise, imagineLittle did they know what was waiting for them.
At no timeen ningún momentoAt no time did we agree to that.
Under no circumstancesbajo ningún conceptoUnder no circumstances must you leave the room.
On no accountde ninguna maneraOn no account should you sign it.
Not onceni una sola vezNot once did she complain.
In no wayde ningún modoIn no way is this my fault.

Con el verbo to be no se usa do: se adelanta el propio verbo. Rarely is he late, nunca Rarely does he be late.

No sooner + had + sujeto + participio + thanNo sooner had I sat down than the phone rang.Apenas me senté, sonó el teléfono.
Hardly + had + sujeto + participio + whenHardly had we left when it started raining.Apenas salimos, empezó a llover.
Scarcely + had + sujeto + participio + whenScarcely had the film started when my phone rang.Apenas empezó la película, sonó el móvil.

El fallo que más se repite: no sooner va con than; hardly y scarcely van con when. No se mezclan.

Grupo 2 · Only y not only

ExpresiónEjemploOjo
Only thenOnly then did I realise the truth.La inversión va detrás de la expresión.
Only after / Only whenOnly when I got home did I understand.La inversión va en la oración principal.
Only ifOnly if you ask will they help you.Igual: se invierte la principal.
Only byOnly by working together can we finish.Muy rentable en un essay.
Not untilNot until she called did I understand.Nunca Not until she called I understood.
Not only… but alsoNot only did she cook, but she also cleaned.Solo se invierte la primera parte.

So y such para enfatizar

EstructuraEjemplo
So + adjetivo + was/were + sujeto + that…So difficult was the exam that nobody finished.
Such + was + sustantivo + that…Such was his anger that he walked out.

Grupo 3 · Condicionales sin if

Con ifSin if (invertida)Tipo
If I were you, I would accept.Were I you, I would accept.2º condicional
If she had known, she would have come.Had she known, she would have come.3º condicional
If you should need help, call me.Should you need help, call me.1º condicional formal
If it had not been for you, I would have failed.Had it not been for you, I would have failed.negativa

En la forma negativa no se contrae: Had I not known, nunca Hadn’t I known.

Los cinco errores que suspenden

ErrorCorrectoPor qué
Never I have seen it.Never have I seen it.Falta invertir: el auxiliar va delante del sujeto.
Rarely he goes out.Rarely does he go out.Sin auxiliar hay que añadir do/does/did y dejar el verbo en base.
Only when I arrived, I saw it.Only when I arrived did I see it.La inversión va en la oración principal.
No sooner had I left when…No sooner had I left thanNo sooner pide than; hardly y scarcely piden when.
Hadn’t I known…Had I not known…En las condicionales invertidas no se contrae la negación.

  1. Never ___ I seen such a beautiful sunset.El verbo principal es seen, un participio, así que el auxiliar es have: I have seen pasa a Never have I seen.
  2. Rarely ___ he arrive on time.
  3. Under no circumstances ___ you touch that button.Es una prohibición, así que pide modal: should o must. Con do la frase pierde el matiz.
  4. Little ___ they know what was waiting for them.Little did + sujeto + know es una fórmula fija en pasado. Es la frase típica de las novelas.
  5. Seldom ___ we get the chance to travel.Sujeto we en presente: el auxiliar es do, no does. Seldom es la versión formal de rarely.
  6. At no time ___ she admit the mistake.
  7. Not once ___ he apologise for what he said.
  8. Never before ___ I felt so nervous.
  9. In no way ___ this your fault.Con el verbo to be no se usa do: se adelanta el propio verbo. This is not your fault pasa a In no way is this your fault.
  10. On no account ___ you leave the door open.Otra prohibición formal, así que modal. On no account do you leave no funciona.

Ficha 2 · No sooner, only y not only (intermedio)

Completa.

  1. ___ sooner had I closed my eyes than the alarm went off.La fórmula es No sooner… than. Con Hardly la frase pediría when.
  2. Hardly had we sat down ___ the lights went out. Solo no sooner lleva than.
  3. Not only ___ she cook dinner, but she also cleaned the kitchen.Se invierte solo la primera parte: Not only did she cook. La segunda, con but… also, va en orden normal.
  4. Only then ___ I understand the problem.La expresión restrictiva arrastra la inversión de la principal, en pasado: did I understand.
  5. Only when I got home ___ I realise I had lost my keys.
  6. So tired ___ he that he fell asleep at his desk.Estructura So + adjetivo + was/were + sujeto + that. El sujeto es he en pasado, así que was.
  7. Such ___ his talent that everyone noticed him immediately.Con Such el verbo va justo detrás. Con So iría un adjetivo en medio.
  8. Only if you ask ___ they help you.La condición no se invierte; lo que se invierte es la principal, en futuro: will they help.
  9. Scarcely ___ the film started when my phone rang.Scarcely + had + sujeto + participio.
  10. Not until I saw the photo ___ I believe it.Not until funciona como only when: la inversión cae en la oración principal.

Ficha 3 · Condicionales invertidas (difícil)

Elige o completa. Esto es material de C1.

  1. ___ I known you were coming, I would have baked a cake.Tercer condicional: If I had known pasa a Had I known. Se quita if y se adelanta had.
  2. ___ you need any further information, please contact us.Condicional formal de email: If you should need pasa a Should you need.
  3. ___ I in your position, I would accept the offer.Segundo condicional: If I were pasa a Were I. Nunca Was I en este registro.
  4. Had it not ___ for your help, I would have failed.La fórmula fija es Had it not been for, equivalente a if it hadn’t been for: de no ser por.
  5. Elige la única frase correcta.Never I have been so embarrassed.Never have I been so embarrassed.Never I was so embarrassed.Never was I been so embarrassed.Never have I been. La primera y la tercera no invierten. La cuarta mezcla was con been, que no existe.
  6. Elige la única frase correcta. No sooner had he arrived when the meeting started. No sooner he had arrived than the meeting started. No sooner had he arrived than the meeting started. No sooner did he arrive than the meeting had started. No sooner had he arrived than.
  7. Elige la única frase correcta.Only after she left, I found the letter.Only after she left did I find the letter.Only after did she leave I found the letter.Only after she left found I the letter.Only after she left did I find the letter.
  8. Elige la única frase correcta.Hadn’t I seen it, I wouldn’t believe it.Had not I seen it, I wouldn’t believe it.Had I not seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it.If I had not seen it, I hadn’t believed it.Had I not seen it, I wouldn’t have believed it.
  9. Reescribe con inversión. She had never felt so alone. → ___ had she felt so alone.Se saca el adverbio negativo al principio y se invierte lo que ya era auxiliar: Never had she felt so alone.
  10. Reescribe con inversión. We can only solve this by talking. → Only by talking ___ we solve this.Con Only by + -ing se invierte el modal de la principal: can we solve.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿En qué nivel se piden las inversiones?
Empiezan a aparecer en B2 con never, not only y hardly.
Cambia solo la conjunción: no sooner… than frente a hardly o scarcely… when.
¿Por qué se dice «Only when I arrived did I see it» y no «did I arrive»?
¿Se puede contraer «Had I not known»?
