The shipping forecast
For nearly a century, the BBC has broadcast a list of sea areas and weather conditions that (1) but a handful of listeners will ever need. It is read slowly, in a fixed order, and (2) a single word is wasted.
Its audience is largely made (3) of people on dry land. Some say they use it to fall asleep; others admit to no reason (4) all. What they seem to value is the shape of the thing: the same names in the same sequence, night (5) night, whatever else has happened that day.
Attempts to modernise it have not (6) well. When the timing was moved in 1993, the broadcaster received more letters than it had over any political controversy that year. The change was quietly reversed.
There is a lesson here that has (7) to do with weather. A service designed for a tiny professional audience turned out to matter to a much larger one, (8) for reasons nobody had thought to ask about.
