Parte 1 · Multiple choice cloze
The return of the night train
The night train is (1) ___ a comeback. Twenty years ago the sleeper was widely regarded as a (2) ___ of the past: too slow to compete with cheap flights, too expensive to run. A handful of European operators kept a few lines going, largely out of stubbornness.
What changed was not nostalgia but arithmetic. A traveller who boards at ten and (3) ___ off at seven has spent the night in a bed rather than a hotel, and has lost no working day at either (4) ___ . Once the price of the hotel is (5) ___ into account, the fare stops looking extravagant.
The obstacles are practical rather than romantic. Rolling stock is scarce, and building a new sleeper carriage takes years. Track access at night is often (6) ___ over to maintenance. And the economics only (7) ___ up if the train runs close to full, which means routes have to be chosen with more care than enthusiasm usually (8) ___ for.
- 1. The night train is ___ a comebackdoingmakinghavingtakingmaking.
- 2. regarded as a ___ of the pastrelicrestleftoverremainsrelic.
- 3. a traveller who boards at ten and ___ off at sevendropscomesgetsstepsgets. Get off es bajarse de un transporte público. Step off existe pero es literal, un paso; drop off con sujeto persona significa quedarse dormido, que aquí crearía una frase muy rara.
- 4. has lost no working day at either ___endsideedgepointend.
- 5. once the price of the hotel is ___ into accountheldtakenbroughtputtaken. Take something into account es tener algo en cuenta.
- 6. track access at night is often ___ over to maintenanceleftpassedturnedhandedhanded. Hand over to es ceder algo a otro. Pass over significa ignorar a alguien y turn over cambiaría el sentido a dar la vuelta o facturar.
- 7. the economics only ___ up if the train runs close to fullholdstackcountbuildstack.
- 8. more care than enthusiasm usually ___ forleavesgivesmakesallowsallows.
Why museums keep what they cannot show
Most of what a museum owns is never (9) display. The proportion varies, but a figure of ninety per cent is not (10) all unusual, and in some collections it is higher still. To a visitor this can look (11) if it were simple waste.
It is not. A collection is useful precisely (12) it is complete: one beautiful pot tells you about a single potter, whereas four hundred ordinary ones tell you how a town ate. The objects in storage are what (13) the objects on the wall mean anything.
Then there is time. A museum is not acquiring things for this generation (14) much as for the next one, and it has no way of knowing (15) future researchers will find interesting. Whatever is thrown away now cannot be examined later, no (16) how good the reasons seemed at the time.
- 9. is never ___ displayon. On display es expuesto. Las expresiones de estado con display, sale o show van casi siempre con on.
- 10. is not ___ all unusualat. Not at all refuerza la negación: no es raro en absoluto.
- 11. this can look ___ if it were simple wasteas.
- 12. useful precisely ___ it is completebecause.
- 13. the objects in storage are what ___ the objects on the wall mean anythingmake.
- 14. not for this generation ___ much as for the next oneso. Not so much A as B es la estructura para corregir una idea: no tanto por esto como por aquello. El as que viene después la delata.
- 15. no way of knowing ___ future researchers will find interestingwhat.
- 16. no ___ how good the reasons seemedmatter.
The quiet return of the letter
Handwritten letters were, until recently, considered hopelessly (17) ___ (FASHION). Email was faster, cheaper and, in any (18) ___ (PRACTICE) sense, better. Yet stationery shops report a steady (19) ___ (GROW) in sales, driven largely by customers under thirty.
The (20) ___ (EXPLAIN) offered by the sellers is not a sentimental one. A letter is (21) ___ (DELIBERATE) slow: it cannot be sent by accident, and it arrives days after the mood that produced it. That delay, which once looked like a (22) ___ (WEAK), now reads as proof that somebody meant it.
There is also the matter of (23) ___ (PRIVATE). A letter sits on no server, cannot be forwarded with one click, and is (24) ___ (LIKELY) to be read by anybody except the person it was sent to.
- 17. considered hopelessly ___ (FASHION)unfashionable.
- 18. in any ___ (PRACTICE) sensepractical.
- 19. report a steady ___ (GROW) in salesgrowth.
- 20. The ___ (EXPLAIN) offered by the sellersexplanation.
- 21. A letter is ___ (DELIBERATE) slowdeliberately.
- 22. which once looked like a ___ (WEAK)weakness.
- 23. the matter of ___ (PRIVATE)privacy.
- 24. and is ___ (LIKELY) to be read by anybody exceptunlikely.
- 25. The meeting began and immediately the fire alarm went off. SOONER
No sooner ___ than the fire alarm went off.had the meeting begun. Cuatro palabras. La pareja fija es no sooner… than, nunca when. - 26. Nobody could explain why the results were so different. ACCOUNTED
The difference in the results ___ by anyone.could not be accounted for. Cinco palabras. - 27. There is no reason to phone him now. POINT
There ___ him now.is no point in phoning. Cinco palabras. There is no point in lleva siempre -ing detrás. - 28. Ana started running three months ago. TOOK
Ana ___ three months ago.took up running. Tres palabras. - 29. It does not matter how much it costs; we are going. REGARDLESS
We are going ___ costs.regardless of how much it. Cinco palabras. Regardless of pide sustantivo o pregunta indirecta, y en pregunta indirecta el orden es sujeto y luego verbo: how much it costs, no how much does it cost. - 30. Luis did not mention that he had already seen the film. FAILED
Luis ___ he had already seen the film.failed to mention that. Cuatro palabras.
