When Marta finished her degree in economics, everyone assumed she would look for work in a bank. Instead she spent the summer in her uncle’s garage, taking bicycles apart and putting them back together. Her uncle had repaired bikes in the same street for thirty years and complained constantly that nobody wanted the job any more. Marta never told him that she had already turned down two interviews.

By September she had opened a small workshop of her own, three streets away. The first months were hard: customers arrived with punctures and left without paying, and she often worked until midnight. What saved the business was not advertising but a habit she had picked up from her uncle. She wrote down the name of every customer and the exact problem with the bike, so that when they came back a year later, she remembered.

Her uncle retired in March. He arrived at her workshop carrying his own tools in a wooden box, left them on the counter and walked out without a word. Marta still uses them, although half of them are older than she is. She has never regretted her decision, but she admits that she has never explained it properly to her parents either.
