Learning to sail

Sam had never been on a boat before the summer he turned fifteen. His aunt lived on the coast and had promised to teach him to sail, but for the first two weeks it rained almost every day, and they stayed in the kitchen drawing knots on paper. Sam was bored, and he said so.

When they finally went out, everything went wrong. Sam pulled the wrong rope, the sail flapped like a flag and his aunt had to take over. He expected her to be angry, but she laughed and told him she had done exactly the same thing at his age.

By the end of August, Sam could sail the little boat alone across the bay, although he was still nervous about coming back to the jetty. His aunt told him the trick was to arrive slowly and to accept that sometimes you simply have to go round again.

Sam now studies in a city three hundred kilometres from the sea. He keeps a piece of rope on his desk and practises the knots whenever he is worried about an exam. He says it is the only thing that reliably calms him down.
