  1. 1. En una cafetería: Table service only. Please do not order at the counter. Do not go up to the third floor.

The woman who reads the sea

Marta Oubiña has worked as a mariscadora, gathering shellfish on the Galician coast, for twenty-six years. She left school at fifteen and says, without any false modesty, that she knows more about that beach than anybody alive.

Three years ago a university team arrived to study why the clam population was falling. They spent two seasons taking measurements. Marta told them in the first week where the problem was: a drainage pipe two kilometres up the coast that had been leaking since the winter storms. Nobody wrote it down.

The final report, published last year, identified the pipe. Marta was not mentioned in it. When a journalist asked her about this, she laughed and said that being right had never been the point; the point was that the pipe got fixed, and it did.

What has changed since is small but real. The same university now pays four mariscadoras to record what they see, every day, on a simple form. It costs almost nothing and it has already produced two warnings that the sensors missed.

Marta is fifty-eight and her daughter is not going to do this work. She says she does not blame her, and that in twenty years the beach will be studied by people with excellent degrees and no idea what it looked like in March.

  1. 11. What did Marta tell the university team? That the clams were fineWhere the problem was, in the first weekThat the study was uselessThat she wanted to be paidDónde estaba el problema, la primera semana. Y el texto añade la frase que duele: nobody wrote it down.
  2. 12. What did the final report say?It mentioned MartaIt identified the pipeIt blamed the weatherIt found no problemIdentificó la tubería, lo mismo que ella había dicho dos temporadas antes. Y no la mencionaba.
  3. 13. How did Marta react to not being mentioned? She complained to the universityShe wrote to the newspaperShe stopped workingShe laughed and said the point was that it got fixedSe rió y dijo que lo importante era que se arreglara.
  4. 14. What does the university do now?It has closed the beachIt has stopped the studyIt has installed more sensorsIt pays four mariscadoras to record what they seePaga a cuatro mariscadoras por anotar lo que ven, y ya han detectado dos avisos que los sensores no vieron.
  5. 15. What does Marta think will happen in twenty years? Her daughter will take overThe beach will be studied by people who never saw itThe university will leaveThe beach will disappearLa estudiará gente que no la ha visto.

Sobran tres letras. Cinco preguntas, dos puntos cada una.

Learning to say no

For years I said yes to everything at work. (16) It felt like the same thing at the time.

The first no was ridiculous. Somebody asked me to review a document that had nothing to do with my job, and I heard myself say that I could not do it that week. (17) Nothing at all happened.

What surprised me was the second part. (18) Two of them told me afterwards that they had assumed I enjoyed the extra work, which is the most depressing sentence anybody has said to me at an office.

I now have a rule that sounds childish and works. (19) If it is still a yes the next morning, it probably was one.

The only thing I would say to somebody starting out is that it gets easier, but not quickly. (20) It took me about a year to stop.

LetraFrase
AI waited for the consequences for about three days.
BI never say yes to anything on the same day I am asked.
CPeople did not get angry; they simply asked somebody else.
DI wanted to be useful, and I confused that with being available.
EMy manager noticed and asked whether everything was all right at home.
FFor the first few months I apologised every single time.
GThe work was interesting and the hours were reasonable.
HNobody ever thanked me for any of it.
  1. Hueco 16: ___D. La frase de después dice it felt like the same thing, y ese the same thing necesita dos cosas delante que se confundan: ser útil y estar siempre disponible.
  2. Hueco 17: ___A.
  3. Hueco 18: ___C. El párrafo habla de cómo reaccionó la gente, y la frase siguiente empieza con two of them: ese them tiene que referirse a personas ya mencionadas.
  4. Hueco 19: ___B.
  5. Hueco 20: ___F. It took me about a year to stop necesita algo que parar, y F lo da: pedir perdón cada vez.

Parte 5 · Multiple choice cloze

The bookshop on wheels

Nine villages in the province of Teruel have no shop of any kind. Since 2021 a van has visited them once a fortnight, and it does not (21) ___ food. It carries eight hundred books.

The driver, Elisa, chooses what goes in. She keeps a notebook with what each reader has (22) ___ , and admits that she sometimes brings a book she is sure somebody will like, even if they did not (23) ___ for it.

The van does not (24) ___ money. It is paid for by the province, and every year somebody asks whether it is worth it. The answer Elisa gives is not about reading. In several of those villages, she says, the fortnight is (25) ___ by the van: people come out, they talk, and then they go home. The books are the excuse.

Three villages on the route have fewer than twenty inhabitants. When the last one dies, the stop will (26) ___ , and Elisa says she thinks about that every time she drives away.

  1. 21. and it does not ___ foodsellspendcostbuysell.
  2. 22. a notebook with what each reader has ___lentborrowedleftgivenborrowed.
  3. 23. even if they did not ___ for itspeaktellsayaskask. Ask for something es pedir algo.
  4. 24. The van does not ___ moneywinearnmakedomake. Make money es dar beneficios.
  5. 25. the fortnight is ___ by the vanbrokenseparatedcutdivideddivided.
  6. 26. the stop will ___escapevanishdisappearleavedisappear.

A message to a landlord

Dear Mr Prieto,

I am writing (27) the heating in the flat. It has not worked properly (28) the beginning of November, and it is now much colder.

I called the number you gave me twice, (29) nobody answered. I also sent a message on the tenth and I have not had a reply (30) .

Could you send somebody this week? I am at home every afternoon, (31) Thursday. If you need me to be there in the morning, tell me and I will arrange it.

Thank you (32) your help.

Yours sincerely,
Nadia Ferrer

  1. 27. I am writing ___ the heatingabout.
  2. 28. It has not worked properly ___ the beginning of Novembersince.
  3. 29. I called the number twice, ___ nobody answeredbut.
  4. 30. I have not had a reply ___yet.
  5. 31. I am at home every afternoon, ___ Thursdayexcept.
  6. 32. Thank you ___ your helpfor. Thank you for siempre.
