Orders already paid for can be collected from the side door until 2 p.m.Quien ya haya pagado su pedido puede recogerlo.
  2. 2. Mensaje: Ana — the tickets arrived but they are for Saturday, not Friday. Let me know today if that still works for you, otherwise I will try to change them. Let me know if that still works for you es pedir una respuesta, no dinero. I will try to change them.
  3. 3. Cartel en una biblioteca: Group study rooms may be booked for up to two hours. Rooms not occupied fifteen minutes after the start of a booking will be given to other users.
  4. 4. Aviso: Your delivery could not be left because nobody was at home. It is now at the Post Office on Green Street and will be kept there for ten working days. Will be kept for ten working days es un plazo.
  5. 5. Cartel en una piscina: Lanes 1 and 2 are reserved for lessons until 6 p.m.

Five people are looking for a weekend course. Below are eight courses.

1 Marta can only give up one single day, needs a course near the train station, has never done anything like it and cannot spend extra money on materials.
2 Dani is free on Sunday mornings only. He wants something physical and outdoors, and he is not a complete beginner.
3 Rocío wants to improve at something for her job. She needs a certificate at the end and can only attend in the evening.
4 Hugo wants to bring his ten-year-old daughter, and would like the two of them to do the same activity together.
5 Nerea wants a small group and something that will help her meet people. The price is not a problem.

A Bread from scratch. One Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two minutes from the station. Flour, tins and aprons provided. For people who have never baked.
B Trail running group. Sunday mornings, 9 to 11, in the hills above the town. You should already be able to run for half an hour.
C Bookkeeping for small businesses. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m., ten weeks. Certificate awarded on completion.
D Family pottery. Saturday afternoons. Adults and children from eight years old work side by side on the same piece.
E Cook and talk. Friday evenings, maximum six people, dinner included in the price. Designed for people who are new in town.
F Photography walk. Saturdays, all levels. Bring your own camera; printing is paid for separately.
G Adult swimming. Sunday, 8 to 9 a.m., indoor pool, beginners only.
H Digital marketing intensive. Saturday and Sunday, full days. Certificate awarded.

  1. 6. MartaABCDEFGHA.
  2. 7. DaniABCDEFGHB.

The girl who started a repair café

Sofía Márquez was fifteen when she asked the town hall for a room. She had noticed that her neighbours threw away kettles, lamps and headphones that were almost always broken in the same small way, and she had learnt from her grandfather how to open them.

The town hall said no twice. The third time, she took a box of eleven repaired objects to the meeting and left it on the table. She was given a room in the old market on Saturday mornings, on condition that an adult was always present.

The repair café now has nine volunteers, four of them under eighteen. People bring anything that is not too heavy to carry. About half of the items are fixed on the day; a quarter need a part that is ordered and fitted the following week; the rest are beyond help, and Sofía says those are the most useful visits of all, because the owner goes home knowing why.

Not everything has gone smoothly. An electrical shop in the same street complained that the café was taking its business, and for a month Sofía was not sure the project would survive. The argument ended in an unexpected way: the shop now sends the café customers whose repairs would cost more than a new machine, and the café sends the shop anything that needs a professional.

Sofía is nineteen now and studying engineering in another city. She comes back one Saturday a month. «People think the point is saving money,» she says. «For most of them it is not. The point is that somebody looks at your thing and tells you the truth about it.»

About half of the items are fixed on the day.
The owner goes home knowing why.
Empezaron a mandarse clientes.
Ella misma descarta lo del dinero: people think the point is saving money… for most of them it is not.

Sobran tres letras. Cinco preguntas, dos puntos cada una.

My first week working in a hotel

I took the job because it was the only one left in July. (16) The manager, a calm woman called Pilar, told me on the first morning that I would be tired for a week and fine after that.

She was right about the tiredness. What she did not mention was the feet. (17) By Wednesday I had bought a second pair of shoes with money I had not yet earned.

The work itself was simpler than I expected. (18) The difficult part was the twenty seconds between a guest starting to speak and my working out what they actually wanted.

Most guests were easy. A few were not. (19) The trick, Pilar told me, is to answer the complaint and not the voice.

By Sunday I could carry three plates, remember four room numbers and understand a complaint in two languages. (20) I went back the following summer without being asked.

LetraFrase
AI had no idea that standing still could hurt more than walking.
BNobody there had ever done anything like it before.
CI had imagined something far more complicated than carrying trays and pressing buttons.
DNone of that sounds like much until you remember the person who had arrived on the Monday.
EOne man shouted at me about a lift I had never even used.
FI had applied for eleven others and heard nothing from any of them.
GMy friends were all away that month, which made the decision easier.
HThe hotel had sixty rooms and one lift.
  1. Hueco 16: ___F.
  4. Hueco 19: ___E.

Parte 5 · Multiple choice cloze

The Friday with no cars

Three years ago the parents at a primary school in Vigo (21) ___ a simple decision: on Fridays, nobody would arrive by car. At first only eleven families (22) ___ part. The head teacher was careful not to (23) ___ anybody who lived too far away, so a meeting point was set up in a supermarket car park, and families who had to drive could leave the car there and walk the last ten minutes.

The scheme has (24) ___ well. Around eighty per cent of the school now walks on Fridays, and the street outside is quiet enough for the children to (25) ___ each other without shouting. The council has since (26) ___ the same idea to four other schools.

  1. 21. …the parents ___ a simple decisionmadetookputdidmade.
  2. 22. only eleven families ___ parthadgavetookmadetook. Take part es participar, y va siempre con take. Si quisieras usar make, la expresión sería otra: make up part of.
  3. 23. careful not to ___ anybody who lived too far awaymissexcluderefuseavoidexclude.
  4. 24. The scheme has ___ wellworkedservedactedusedworked.
  5. 25. quiet enough for the children to ___ each othersoundlistentellhearhear. Listen es escuchar a propósito y además necesita to: listen to each other.
  6. 26. The council has since ___ the same idea to four other schoolsgrownenlargedwidenedextendedextended.

Why I started running

I started running because (27) friend of mine was training for a race and needed somebody slower to run with. That was in March. By June I was the (28) who needed company, and she had stopped.

The first month was awful. I could not run for more (29) four minutes without stopping, and I was sure everybody was looking at me. Nobody was. People are far too busy worrying about (30) to notice a stranger running badly.

What changed everything (31) a very simple rule: I only had to put my shoes on. If, after five minutes, I still wanted to go home, I could. In three years I (32) gone home twice.

  1. 27. I started running because ___ friend of mine was traininga. No se dice my friend of mine ni one friend of mine.
  2. 28. By June I was the ___ who needed companyone.
  3. 29. I could not run for more ___ four minutesthan. Comparativo: more than.
  4. 30. too busy worrying about ___ to notice a strangerthemselves. Them serían otras personas distintas.
  5. 31. What changed everything ___ a very simple rulewas.
  6. 32. In three years I ___ gone home twicehave.
