- 1. En un colegio: Lost property is kept for one month. After that it is given to charity.
- 2. Mensaje: I am at the cinema. The film ends at 9.30. Can you pick me up?
- 3. En un supermercado: This till is for customers with ten items or fewer.
- 4. En una playa: Do not swim when the red flag is flying.
- 5. Aviso: Your appointment has been moved from 10.00 to 11.30 on the same day.La cita es otro día.La cita es a otra hora.La cita se ha anulado.Es a otra hora. On the same day deja claro que el día no cambia. Cambiar de hora no es cancelar.
- 6. En un parque: Bicycles must be pushed, not ridden, between the gates.
Three people talk about a job they had as students.
A — Bea
I worked in an ice-cream shop for two summers. Only in July and August, because the shop closed in September. I was on my feet for eight hours a day and I learnt to give change without thinking about it. At the end of the day my boss let us take home whatever was not going to last until the morning, so my family ate a lot of ice cream that year.
B — Iván
I delivered newspapers before school. I had to be at the shop at six, and in winter it was dark and freezing and I hated every minute of it. The money was good for the number of hours, which is why I kept doing it for two years. I finished in 2019 and I still wake up at six without an alarm, which my brother thinks is very funny.
C — Sonia
I looked after two children three afternoons a week, from four until seven. The first month was hard, because the younger one did not want me there and said so every day. Then something changed and it became the easiest job I have ever had. When I left for university the family gave me a book with photographs of the three of us in it.
- 9. ¿Quién podía llevarse comida a casa?ABCA.
A school with no bell
The Sierra school in Teruel has ninety-one pupils and no bell.
The bell broke in 2018. The head teacher, Amaia Sanz, decided to wait a few weeks before replacing it, mainly because there was no money for it in that year’s budget. Teachers were asked to finish their classes by the clock instead.
Nothing went wrong. Classes started on time. What changed was the noise: the corridors between lessons were quieter, and teachers found that they could finish a sentence instead of stopping in the middle of one.
Some pupils did not like it at first. Three of them told Amaia that without a bell they never knew how much time was left. The school put a large clock in every classroom, which cost far less than a new bell.
Two teachers still want the bell back. They say that with ninety-one pupils it is easy to manage without one, but that a bigger school could not. Amaia agrees with them, and says that is exactly why she is not going to tell any other school what to do.
There was no money for it in that year’s budget.
- 15. ¿Qué pasó con las clases?Se suspendieron.Eran más cortas.Empezaban puntuales.Empezaban tarde.Empezaban puntuales. Nothing went wrong. Classes started on time.
Parte 4 · Multiple choice cloze
My grandmother’s recipes
My grandmother never (19) ___ down a single recipe. When I asked her how much flour to use, she (20) ___ me a cup and said, this many. For years I thought she was (21) ___ it difficult on purpose.
She was not. She simply cooked the way most people (22) ___ to: by looking, tasting and changing things as she went. I have her cake in my head and not on paper, and when I make it I still (23) ___ of her hands rather than of any number.
Last year I finally wrote it (24) ___ , for my sister. It took four attempts and a set of kitchen scales.
- 19. My grandmother never ___ down a single recipetookputsetwrotewrote. Write down es apuntar. I finally wrote it down.
- 20. she ___ me a cup and said, this manyleftgavetookbroughtgave.
- 21. I thought she was ___ it difficult on purposedoinghavingmakingputtingmaking. Make something difficult es la fórmula: make más objeto más adjetivo. Con do no existe.
- 22. the way most people ___ tousewereusedhadused.
- 23. I still ___ of her hands rather than of any numberrememberthinkconsiderknowthink.
- 24. Last year I finally wrote it ___outupindowndown.
An email to a teacher
Dear Mr Ortiz,
I am writing (25) ask about the trip to Segovia. My parents have signed the form, (26) I have not paid yet because the bank was closed on Friday. Can I bring the money (27) Monday?
I would also like to know (28) much the lunch costs. Some people say the school is paying (29) it and some say it is not.
Thank you very much (30) advance.
Yours sincerely,
Lía Cabo
- 25. I am writing ___ ask about the tripto.
- 26. My parents have signed the form, ___ I have not paid yetbut.
- 27. Can I bring the money ___ Monday?on.
- 28. I would also like to know ___ much the lunch costshow. How much pregunta por un precio. Al ser pregunta indirecta, detrás va el orden normal: the lunch costs, no does the lunch cost.
- 29. the school is paying ___ itfor.
- 30. Thank you very much ___ advancein.
