Parte 1 · Carteles y mensajes

  1. 1. En una cafetería: Wi-Fi password at the counter. Please ask a member of staff.
  2. 2. Nota: Mum, I am staying at Lucía’s tonight. I have got my keys, so do not wait up.
  3. 3. En una parada: Buses to the airport leave from stop 4, not from this stop.
  5. 5. Nota en la nevera: There is soup in the blue box. It needs three minutes in the microwave. No queda sopa.Hay que calentar la sopa.La sopa se toma fría.Hay que calentarla. It needs three minutes in the microwave son tres minutos de microondas. Needs aquí significa que hace falta, no que sea opcional.
  6. 6. En un museo: Photographs without flash are allowed.

Three people talk about how they get to work.

A — Lucía
I walk. It takes twenty-five minutes each way. I started two years ago, when my car broke down and I could not pay for the repair, and then I never went back to driving. I listen to a podcast on the way and I arrive awake. The only thing I really hate is the rain; on wet mornings I would happily get in a car again.

B — Óscar
I cycle eight kilometres. There is a shower at my office, which is the only reason it works. I used to spend nearly a hundred euros a month on petrol and parking, and now I spend almost nothing. A car door opened in front of me last spring and I spent two weeks with my arm in a bandage, but I was back on the bike in June.

C — Nadia
I take the train. It is forty minutes, door to door, and I read for most of it. On Mondays there is never a free seat and I stand the whole way, which is the worst part. The good part is that I can answer emails on the train, so I arrive with an hour of work already done.

  5. 11. ¿Quién no siempre puede sentarse?ABCC. Nadia, los lunes: there is never a free seat and I stand the whole way.

The shop that only opens on Sundays

Nico Ferrer is a nurse from Monday to Friday. On Sundays he sells cheese.

His shop is one room next to his house, in a village of two hundred people. There has been no shop in the village since the last one closed six years ago, and the nearest supermarket is twenty minutes away by car. Many of his neighbours do not drive.

Nico did not plan to open a shop. He began by bringing bread back from town for two older neighbours. Then it was four. When it became twelve, he decided it was easier to open his door on Sunday mornings and let people come to him.

He sells bread, milk, eggs, fruit and cheese from a farm six kilometres away. He does not sell anything frozen, because he has nowhere to keep it, and he does not open on other days, because he is at the hospital.

The shop does not make much money. Nico says that is not the point, and that he would only stop if somebody opened a proper shop in the village. «That would be the best news I have had in years,» he says.

  1. 14. ¿En qué trabaja Nico entre semana?En un hospital.En una tienda.Conduciendo un autobús.En una granja.En un hospital. La primera línea dice que es enfermero, y más abajo lo confirma: he is at the hospital. La tienda es solo los domingos.
  3. 16. ¿Cómo empezó la tienda?Empezó trayendo pan para unos vecinos.Quería dejar el hospital.Compró una tienda antigua.Se lo pidió el pueblo.Trayendo pan para unos vecinos. Primero dos, luego cuatro, luego doce. El texto dice Nico did not plan to open a shop, así que nadie se lo pidió ni fue una idea de negocio.
  4. 17. ¿Por qué no vende congelados?Porque son muy caros.Porque no tiene dónde guardarlos.Porque la granja no los hace.Porque nadie los quiere.Porque no tiene dónde guardarlos. He has nowhere to keep it.
Lo dice él: sería the best news I have had in years.

Parte 4 · Multiple choice cloze

Learning to swim at thirty

I learnt to swim when I was thirty. I had always been (19) ___ of deep water, and for years I told people that I simply did not (20) ___ swimming. That was not true.

A friend found a class for adults at our local pool. There were nine of us, and (21) ___ of us could swim. The teacher, Marga, spent the first two lessons teaching us to put our faces in the water and (22) ___ out slowly.

It took me five months to swim twenty-five metres. It was the (23) ___ difficult thing I have ever learnt. Now I swim twice a week, and I still remember how it (24) ___ to be afraid of the water.

  1. 19. I had always been ___ of deep waterafraidscaryworriedfrighteningafraid.
  2. 20. I did not ___ swimmingagreeenjoyhopewantenjoy.
  3. 21. There were nine of us, and ___ of us could swimanynonenonobodynone. None of us es ninguno de nosotros. No va pegado a un sustantivo (no students) y nobody y any no admiten of us detrás en una frase afirmativa como esta.
  4. 22. put our faces in the water and ___ out slowlybreathetakeblowletbreathe.
  5. 23. It was the ___ difficult thing I have ever learntmostmuchmoreverymost. Superlativo con adjetivo largo: the most difficult.
  6. 24. I still remember how it ___ to be afraid of the watersoundedlookedtastedfeltfelt.

A message to a friend

Hi Ruth,

Thanks (25) the book. I started it on the train and I have almost finished it already.

I am writing because I am going to Bilbao (26) Friday and I remember that you lived there. Do you know (27) good place to eat near the museum? We will be four people and one of us does (28) eat meat.

We arrive at eleven and the train back leaves at seven, (29) we have the whole day. If you have any other ideas, send (30) to me before Thursday.

See you soon,
Clara

  1. 25. Thanks ___ the bookfor. Thanks for siempre. Si detrás hubiera un verbo, seguiría igual: thanks for coming.
  2. 26. I am going to Bilbao ___ Fridayon. Los días de la semana llevan on. In es para meses y años y at para horas.
  3. 27. Do you know ___ good place to eata.
  4. 28. one of us does ___ eat meatnot.
  5. 29. the train back leaves at seven, ___ we have the whole dayso.
  6. 30. If you have any other ideas, send ___ to methem. Sustituye a ideas, que es plural, y va detrás del verbo, así que es pronombre objeto: them, no they.
