The myth of the morning person
Every January, thousands of people resolve to become early risers, convinced that waking at five will transform their productivity. Most abandon the attempt within a fortnight, and they tend to blame their own weakness. The science suggests they are blaming the wrong thing.
Sleep researchers have known for decades that our internal clocks vary, largely for genetic reasons. Roughly one person in four is a genuine morning type, one in four a genuine evening type, and the rest fall somewhere between. Trying to shift a late chronotype by several hours is not a matter of willpower; it is closer to asking someone to change their height.
What is striking is how one-sided the cultural conversation remains. Books celebrating the five o clock club sell in their millions, while the evidence that evening types perform better on creative tasks in the afternoon attracts almost no attention. The problem is not that early rising is bad advice. It is that it is presented as universal advice, and that is a different claim altogether.
